Walking down the street, I get the feeling that every person dreads. Every few seconds I once again resist the urge to check behind me. It's not like I can hear anything back there, so why would I need to check? However, when my keys drop, so does my heart. I stop immediately, but the thing behind me took an extra step. Now all doubt was gone, but a new question arises. Do I dare look at my unknown companion? My body answers for me as my feet slowly start turning me around. I squeeze my eyes shut and finish the turn. A few seconds pass and I finally get up the nerve to open my eyes, but when I do I cannot believe what I see. It is like I'm looking into a mirror. Everything from the tight outfit to the sloppy bun atop my head is exactly the same. Everything, that is, except for the eyes. While my eyes are a dull blue, its eyes are all black. They stare at me blankly. I can't look away, and the longer I stare into those eyes, the colder I get. My limbs are heavy and weak as I slowly make my way to the ground. This thing watches me the whole time, never letting it's empty gaze leave mine. I'm numb. Any feeling I had is gone. My eyes fight to stay open. The thing kneels down beside me and leans closer. As my eyelids start to get heavier, I try to scream out, but not a single sound is made. It raises a finger to its lips as if to quiet me. Now my eyes are barely open; I know once they close they will never open again. I knows this because just before everything goes black, I see the creature blink. As its eyes reopen, I see that mine have replaced its black pits and a grin stretches ever-so-slightly across its face.
A short horror story about a woman's last moments.
